The Malaysian Indian Sports and Cultural Foundation- Universal Fitness & Leisure (MISCF-UFL) have not set any targets in the TNB-Malaysia Junior Hockey League.
MISCF-UFL, making their debut in Division Two, have assembled a group of youngsters from Mentakab, Pahang, for their campaign in Group B.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan was present at the introduction of players and officials in Kuala Lumpur.
Kamalanathan congratulated the MISCF-UFL for taking part in the TNB-MJHL and said: “The MISCF have launched several programmes to encourage youngsters to be active in sports.
“With this, we wish them all the best in the hockey league.”
MISCF chairman Datuk T. Mohan added they were not looking to become champions overnight.
“The league is a platform for the players to gain exposure.
“Most of them are school boys and playing in the league will give them opportunities to be identified by other established teams as well as higher learning institutions.
“We would like to see the players featuring in Division One or the MHL in the coming years. We are also grateful to the sponsors for supporting us. They are Universal Fitness & Leisure, Megatech, Jaya Restaurant and JV Skill Training Centre,” said Mohan
MISCF-UFL, coached by MS Magenthiran, had a disappointing start when they were beaten 5-0 by Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) Jrs in their opening match.
However, they recovered, from the setback and edged MSSWPKL 3-2 in their second game.
Before MISCF-UFL could settle down, MSSWPKL took the lead in the second minute when Mohammad Shahzariq Haikal Mohd Saiful scored.
MISCF-UFL equalised in the 11th minute through R. Thivagaran’s field goal. After the break, Thivagaran made it 2-1 for MISCF-UFL in the 45th minute when he scored from a penalty stroke. MISCF-UFL gained confidence and scored again the 53rd minute through M. Kiran Raj.
MSSWPKL reduced the deficit in the 56th minute when Muhammad Azreen Mustama scored.
MSICF-UFL team manager P. Sughumaran said the players lacked exposure and it showed in their opening match.
“They were raw to the competitive atmosphere and fell to BJSS Jrs. But they were in their element and displayed excellent fighting qualities. It was their gallant and determined performance which enabled them to win against MSSWPKL.
“The win should be an inspiration.
“They have a tough season ahead. The players will have to work on their shortcomings before their next matches,’’ said Sughumaran.
