FORMER champions TLDM scored two quick goals en route to a 2-1 win over Royal Selangor Club (RSC) in a Football Association of Selangor (FAS) FA Cup third round match.
In a pulsating game, played at the Royal Selangor Club in Bukit Kiara, TLDM struck before RSC could settle down. Lurking Mohamad Rizal Mohamad Rezuan scored past RSC goalkeeper R. Yugentaran.
Shattered by the early goal, Yugentaran was a bundle of nerves and was beaten again in the 12th minute. This time it was R. Jegan who scored from close range. Unfortunately, Jegan was flashed the red card for a second yellow card offence and sent off in the 47th minute.
Despite being two goals down, RSC were not prepared to give in. They dominated the game and had several chances. However, TLDM goalkeeper Jali Ngatdemin was in form.
He was giving instructions to his defenders and played a crucial role in stopping the RSC strikers from scoring. However, Jali was unable to stop RSC from scoring in the 38th minute.
R. Anbalagan was at the right place at the right time to head home from a corner, beyond Jali’s reach.
Inspired and motivated, RSC gained control of the match but found it hard to beat the stout TLDM defence and Jali. TLDM, despite being a man down, defended gallantly and deservingly marched into the fourth round.
RSC team manager K. Prem Kumar was disappointed with the defeat.
“The two quick goals could have been prevented. We have a young set of players and it took some time for them to recover from the setback. The positive sign was that they never gave up and played well to score a goal.
“Now we have to focus on the league. We are confident of making our presence there,” said Prem Kumar.
TLDM team manager Ahmad Zailan Zulkapli was a relieved man after the match.
“RSC gave us a tough fight. We were lucky to score the two goals early. It helped us maintain the upper hand throughout the match,’’ said Ahmad Zailan.
In the Super Division, Team Force edged Shah Alam City Council 1-0 in a Group A match while former champions PNSB were held to a scoreless draw by Kuala Langat District Football Association.
Team Force team manager Datuk N. Thirumoothy said it was an excellent start for them in the Super Division.
“The players, most of them youngsters, have adapted well to the competitive league. We are optimistic about our chances in both the FA Cup and Super Division,’’ said Thirumoothy.
Former champions Emkay-NPNG and PKNS also recorded convincing wins. Emkay-NPNG went on a scoring spree and defeated Malaysia Airlines 8-0 while PKNS upstaged Klang Gate 4-0.
FAS competition committee deputy chairman Datuk S. Sivasundram said they were able to complete last weekend’s fixtures.
“The weather has been kind to us. Our only problem is getting fields. Despite all these setback, we are confident of completing the season before the fasting month,’’ said Sivasundram.
