FOR the second year in a row, former state player Loh Bok Sheang garnered double honours at the Maybank-PBA-Gosen Penang Closed Individual Badminton championship at the Penang BA hall in Bukit Dumbar.
Last year, he won the men’s singles and doubles crowns. This year, he decided not to defend his singles crown but still walked away with two titles.
The 27-year-old, representing Xtremes Speed BP, bagged the mixed doubles title with clubmate Chew Huey Han and defended the men’s doubles title in style with Ooi Yi Keat. Loh expressed surprise over his success.
“The competition in the men’s doubles was tough. I did not have the chance to properly train and prepare for the tournament with my partner Yi Keat.
“Luckily, we managed to forge a better understanding during the the tournament.
“Everything just fell into place,” he said after the prize presentation.
Loh and Yi Keat showed their class when they beat the OSK BP combination of Janu Saputra and Saik Wei Han 22-20, 21-13 in the men’s doubles final.
In the mixed doubles final later, Loh and Chew showed superb court coverage to down the OSK BP-Sunrise Academy partnership of Lim Ming Chuen and Queenie Chiam 21-18, 21-19.
Another player worth mentioning was Len Kok Dong, who retained his men’s veteran singles title.
The 44 year-old Promaxx BP player registered a hard-earned victory of 21-9, 17-21, 21-13 over Beng San BP’s Hong Hock Heng,
"I knew it was not going to be easy. But my determination to retain the crown was so strong that it helped me to pull through. I am glad I did it," he said.
The new men's singles champion was Ooi Swee Khoon, who last won the title in 2012.
The 31-year-old finished off last year’s runner-up Yi Keat 21-11, 21-10 in a lopsided final.
"I took one match at a time and I’m delighted it worked right to the finish," he said.
