Nine-nation junior badminton tournament aims to unearth new talent

JUNIOR players from academies in nine countries – India, Syria, Czech Republic, Pakistan, Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Germany – have confirmed their participation in the 7th Rawang Open Badminton Tournament at Dewan Badminton ASB in Bandar Baru Rawang on Nov 21 and 22, and Nov 28 and 29.

The event, jointly organised by Rawang Badminton Club, Selayang Municipal Council and the Rawang Assemblyman’s Service Centre, is expected to attract 500 players.

Tournament organising chairman Jeyaseelan Anthony, who is also Rawang Badminton Club founder, said they are introducing six new categories especially for the juniors, in a bid to unearth new talent.

“We are honoured to have foreign junior academies recognising this event and using it to expose their players to competition.

“Our juniors will be able to pit their skills against foreign players, gauge their standards, and also look at ways to improve.

“Our (Rawang) club is currently in the Junior Purple League and that is an achievement for us. We can scout more talent at this event and bring them into our club programmes. With a budget of more than RM100,000 to organise the tournament, we want to make it grand and ensure that badminton academies worldwide place this event on their annual calendar,’’ he said.

“Prize money of RM16,800 is being offered for the tournament, making it the biggest since it was introduced seven years ago,’’ Jeyaseelan added.

There are 13 categories in the event – boys’ under-12, 15 and 18 singles, girls’ under-12, 15 and 18 singles, boys’ under-15 and 18 doubles, men’s and women’s open singles, men’s open doubles, novice men’s doubles (only Malaysians) and veteran men’s doubles.

The champions in the novice men’s doubles and men’s open doubles will receive RM1,000 and RM2,000, respectively, and other prizes. The entry fees range from RM30 to RM100, depending on the categories. Entries close on today.

The main sponsors are Selayang MP William Leong, Dewan ASB Rawang, FX United and Jaguh Gemilang Tuition Centre.
