TWELVE teams took part in a futsal competition organised in conjunction with the Venezuelan Week in Malaysia.

The teams were representing the various embassies in Malaysia. However due to the low number of participating teams, two teams - X-Mail KL and Rom Star - were invited to join the teams from the embassies of Venezuela , Argentina , Italy, France , Turkey , Indonesia, Russia , Holland , Brunei and British High Commission.

Venezuelan ambassador Manuel Antonio Guzman Hernandez said sports had a meaningful influence in the society.

“Be it in Venezuela or Malaysia, sports is being used to bring the communities closer. That’s the reason it is amazing to get the embassies to be part of the futsal competition. The enthusiasm shown by the players was certainly encouraging,’’ said Hernandez.

In the competition held at the Sport Planet in Subang Jaya, X-Mail KL became the champions after a 3-1 win over Venezuela.

X-Mail KL received RM2,000, challenge trophy and medals while Venezuelan embassy returned with RM1,500. France were third after a 2-1 win over Italy and received RM1,000.

Hernandez said they were looking forward to a bigger and more exciting tournament next year.

“It will be 30 years of diplomatic relationship between Venezuela and Malaysia. We would like to invite the teams to join us again and make the event an interesting affair,’’ said Hernandez.
