DESPITE emerging champions of the third Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) Penang Futsal Championship 2015, there was a tinge of regret for FS Sportiva.
The team from the First Solar factory in Kulim came out tops in the one-day championship at the Best Bola Bola Futsal Centre in Butter-worth on Sunday.
However, Sportiva were disappointed they did not get the chance to avenge their defeat in last year’s final to Bard FC.
Sportiva were looking forward to facing Bard in the final again this year but Bard failed to live up to their pre-tournament favourites tag and were knocked out in the quarter-finals by surprise package Infiniash.
Infiniash continued their gallant run in the semi-finals by edging TPM Matrix 2-1 to book their spot in the final.
Meanwhile, Sportiva easily brushed aside Campap A 5-2 in their semi-final tie.
The final was a keenly contested affair, with the teams tied 3-3 at the final whistle.
Sportiva then triumphed 3-1 in the penalty shootout to grab the crown.
“We are happy to win our second FMM Penang Futsal title in the space of three years,” said Sportiva team manager Zaidi Ismail.
“We retained the core of last year’s squad and included only two new players to strengthen the team.
“Infiniash gave us a tough challenge in the final and we held our nerves well to win the title on penalties.”
There were 64 teams in this year’s competition, compared to only 48 last year. Due to the growing popularity of this annual signature event, the organisers intend to expand the competition to accommodate 96 teams next year.
Tournament organising chairman Kew Chii Shiang said there were also plans to introduce a women’s futsal category next year.
“Besides manufacturing companies, we also invited several teams from government agencies like the police, immigration and fire services this year,” he said.
Besides the annual futsal competition, which is one of the biggest in Penang, the FMM Penang branch has also organised a golf tournament and a community charity walk event this year.
