Technical glitches caused Kurnia Racing to pull out of race despite topping qualifying session

Disappointed but thankful: Hunt said it was a privilege to work Malaysian sponsors, Kurnia and AmAssurance.

Kurnia AmAssurance Racing Team decided to pull out of the KL City Grand Prix due to technical glitches with the brakes on the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 machine that resulted in an incident during the eighth lap of Josh Hunt’s qualifying session.

Despite securing pole position for the inaugural KL City GT Cup after Hunt topped both practice and qualifying sessions, safety remains the number one priority for the team.

“It was a fantastic feeling for me to be on pole position in this inaugural KL City Grand Prix. It’s something that is very special, not only for me but for my Malaysian sponsors, Kurnia and AmAssurance. We couldn’t ask for more.

“Unfortunately, overnight, we had a development where the car was diagnosed with a terminal braking problem,” said Hunt.

The Mercedes experienced brake issues in Practice 1 last Friday, and again, in the qualifying round.

Therefore, the team chose to put safety first and decided not to race.

“I’m so disappointed, as I would love nothing more than to stand on the podium of the inaugural KL City Grand Prix.

“I want to personally thank my incredible team at Infinity Race Engineering for working so hard to fix the car, and our sponsor, Kurnia AmAssurance Racing for completely supporting us in this decision to make safety for me and other drivers our number one priority,” said Hunt.

AmGeneral Insurance chief executive officer, Derek Roberts said, “Our vision in participating in this event remains clear, to demonstrate our passion for safety in connection with the expertise of a professional motor sports team.

“I am delighted with the success we had in qualifying at pole, and it goes without saying that the decision to pull out of the race was disappointing, but collectively as a team we have been clear from day one that we will not compromise where safety is concerned,” he said.

The Kurnia AmAssurance Racing Team will continue to feature exclusive content via multiple communications channels, including their Facebook page, to educate the public and promoting their passion for safety. For details, visit
