FOUR groups of football fans gathered to watch the live screening of the Manchester United vs Arsenal match at the Rasta Pub in Taman Tun Dri Ismail, Kuala Lumpur and do their bit for charity.
The four groups – Manchester United Supporters Club, Malaysian Red Devils, Gerakan Evolusi Manchester United Kelab (Gemuk) and Arsenal Malaysia – had more than 300 fans attending the live viewing.
From the entrance fee of RM15 which included food and drinks, RM2 from the amount was donated to the family of the victims of a fatal accident on the DUKE Highway involving six Myvi cars and a Mitsubishi Pajero, three weeks ago.
Fans were heard singing and chanting loudly while there were also club merchandise like jerseys, watches, mufflers and key chains on sale at the viewing party.
Forty-one-year-old Abdul Rahimi Ahmad from Setiawangsa won a Manchester United jersey in the lucky draw grand prize. The main sponsor for the event was HyppTV.
Malaysian Red Devils president Hairul Nazmeiy Salleh said the group gathered to catch the Arsenal game and to give back to the community.
“Besides this, today’s live viewing was a chance for United fans throughout the Klang Valley to show support to their team,’’ he said.
Gemuk event manager Khairul Ezzat said the group usually met up at Wangsa Maju with about 30 people to watch Manchester United matches.
Currently, the group has members in Tawau, Lahad Datu, Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu, Labuan, Muar, Seremban, Kuala Lumpur, Bangi, Ipoh and Kulim – who meet up weekly to watch these matches together.
“We are looking to expand to Terengganu, Kelantan, Malacca, Johor Bharu and Kuantan next year.
“We are planning to hold a Gemuk futsal competition for our members next month in Kuala Lumpur. This viewing party is a chance for our members to meet other fans who share the same interest and enjoy the intensity and excitement that the EPL brings to all football fans.
“It is the second time we have joined Malaysian Red Devils in watching a match. The first was in Sunway Giza on March 22 when Manchester United played Liverpool,’’ he said.
