KUCHING: Swimmers from the Kota Samarahan Amateur Swimming Association (Kotas) played an integral role in the success of the Sarawak team clinching second place at the recently-concluded national schools (MSSM) swimming competition in Shah Alam.
The Sarawak team took home 22 gold medals, of which 18 were contributed by Kotas swimmers.
Most notable was the achievement of 12-year-old Hii Puong Wei, who won 10 individual gold medals and another two golds in relays.
Having undergone intensive training by Kotas team coaches Li Guo Bin and Gary Lau, the Chung Hua schoolboy did the state and Kotas proud by winning all 12 events he entered.
Puong Wei was also named the MSSM individual champion in the under-12 (boys) category with a score of 120 points.
Another outstanding swimmer was Tan Tyng, who took the title of MSSM individual champion in the under-15 (girls) category with a haul of six gold and two silver medals.
Other medallists among Kotas swimmers were Anson Go (one gold, three silver, one bronze), Hii Puong Hou (one gold, one silver, one bronze) and Ayrton Lim (one silver, one bronze).
The Kotas swimmers’s next goal is to record personal best times at the invitational national age group competition on Apr 24-26 at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil.
Tan Tyng, Anson and Puong Hou have also been shortlisted to represent Malaysia at the Asean schools swimming competition due to be held in Brunei in November.
Kotas president Yii Chee Sing said the association was very pleased with the performance of its swimmers and their contribution to the Sarawak team.
“The development programme for this current batch of swimmers began four years ago and we are happy that the resources invested are now bearing fruit,” he said.
He expressed appreciation for the continued support of state sports council director Lucas Kallang and the state Education Department.
He also attributed the success of Kotas swimmers to the generous support of the team’s corporate sponsors — Cahya Mata Sarawak, Hock Seng Lee, Sarawak Energy, KKB Engineering, Timberland Properties, Naim Holdings, Conelli and Madwave.
