SMK Mergong Alor Setar topped the medal standings at the 33rd Kota Setar district schools annual track and field championships in Kedah.
They won 25 gold, 21 silver and 19 bronze medals out of 85 track and field events competed by both boys and girls in three classes (Class One, Two and Three).
The school’s athletes also accounted for two of the seven meet records that were created during the four-day championships at the Darulaman Stadium in Kedah.
Nur Liyana Afiqah Mohd Zulqibri, 13, re-wrote the Girls Class Three long jump record by leaping to 4.47m, which was 0.01m further than the two-year-old record.
The other record by the school was broken by Mohd Syamil Hadzir, who heaved the iron ball to a new distance of 10.34m in the Boys Class Three shot putt event to surpass the former record of 9.13m created last year.
The remaining five records were established by athletes from SMK Bukit Payong (2), Sultan Abdul Hamid College (2) and SMK Seri Pantai.
Sabahan Salawan a/l Sawai of SMK Bukit Payong erased the Boys Class One steeple chase record of 11:41.99s when he clocked 11:18.04s to win the gold medal unchallenged.
Nurul Fazliana Che Mat made it a double success for SMK Bukit Payong when she won the 2,000m steeple chase event for Class Two Girls in record time of 9:20.50s to wipe out the former record of 10:18.4s.
Mohd Asyraf Jefri, a Class Three athlete, posted a double success for Sultan Abdul Hamid College by winning both the sprints in record times. He won the 100m in 12.32s to re-write the former record of 12.7s, and sliced 0.47s off the old 200m record to post a new time of 26.0s.
Fitri Hafiz Othman of SMK Seri Pantai broke the Boys Class Two shot putt record with a new distance of 12.01m beating the former record of 11.67m created in 2009.
SMK Mergong’s closest rivals were SMK Syed Mohamad Al-Bukhary who won 11 gold, four silver and six bronze medals. The medal tally for the top five schools are as follows: SMK Mergong 25-21-19, SMK Syed Mohamed Al-Bukhary 11-4-6, SMK Bukit Payong 9-2-4, Sultan Abdul Hamid College 6-8-4 and SMK Tengku Laksamana 6-4-3.
A total of 977 athletes (546 boys and 431 girls) from 42 secondary schools took part in the competition. SMK Mergong was declared the overall champion.
In the primary schools event, the Alor Janggus cluster of schools emerged champion by winning nine gold, six silver and five bronze medals from 24 events competed by boys and girls in Class Four (10-12 years) and Class Five (below 10 years).
Langgar schools collected five gold, seven silver and three bronze medals to become runners-up while Simpang Empat were third with four gold, five silver and three bronze medals. A total of 222 athletes (109 boys and 113 girls) took part in the event.
Individual athletes in their respective classes were also given recognition, getting a trophy and a certificate each.
Kota Setar district education officer Zulkafly Othman declared the meet closed and presented trophies to the champions.
Zulkafly said the cream of the athletes would represent Kota Setar in the state schools track and field meet which will be held from April 8 to 11 at the Darulaman Stadium.
