NEGRI Sembilan’s R. Thevan is fast establishing himself as an accomplished road-racer.
The youngster collected his second gold medal of the season when he won the men’s Open category in the AmBank-Kuala Lumpur Run at Padang Merbok in Kuala Lumpur.
Thevan, who hails from Port Dickson, also won the men’s Open category in the Sports Toto-Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletic Association (FTKLAA) cross country championships last month.
In the AmBank-KL Run, he completed the 10km distance in a time of 32min 11sec, almost a minute ahead of national trainee Ahmad Luth Hamizan (33:19) and seasoned campaigner R. Venugopal (33:39).
The 22-year-old Thevan said he was happy to continue his winning streak and was similarly pleased with his time.
“It was a smooth run for me and the route was not as tough as the cross country route. The weather was also friendly and I managed to clock a good time,’’ he said.
Police officer Noor Amelia Musa was the winner in the women’s Open category. She clocked 37:46 to win the gold medal ahead of former international Yuan Yufang, who settled for second place with a time of 40:18. Michelle Tan Bee Kiang was third in 40:49.
The event, organised by FTKLAA, was supported the AmBank Group, and Innotex System Corporation and F&N.
Ambank Group Corporate Communications and Marketing senior vice-president Syed Anuar Syed Ali flagged off the event, which attracted about 4,000 participants.
“This is the first time we have come forward to be the title sponsors for the KL Run and we are certainly encouraged and pleased with the response,’’ said Syed Anuar.
“About 300 AmBank Group employees also took part in the run, through which we aim to create a running culture. We also aim to use it as an avenue for our national runners to evaluate their progress.
“Several national runners also took part in the event,’’ added Syed Anuar.
FTKLAA president Leslie Armstrong said they were grateful to the sponsors for making the event a success.
“The event was named the KL Run to promote the city as a sporting destination. But if not for the support from AmBank Group and the other sponsors we could not have organised the championship.
“We are looking forward to working with them once again next year and we hope to have AmBank Group on board as the main sponsor again,’’ added Armstrong.
