Southampton stunning Man Utd at Old Trafford, Everton holding the champions to a deserved draw and Tottenham Hotspurs beaten by an Alan Pardew-inspired Crystal Palace. Last week’s English Premier League matches certainly had plenty of shocks and talking points.
The Saints’ win was the shock of the round last week. Substitute Dusan Tadic scored the only goal of the game as Ronald Koeman’s side pulled off the perfect smash-and-grab away victory to move two points ahead of the Red Devils and eight points behind second-placed Man City in the standings.
To be honest, United were poor last week, so poor that Louis van Gaal’s side did not even muster a single shot on target as their 10-match unbeaten league run was ended.
Rooney and Co head to London today to play QPR in a potentially explosive match with a lot at stake. The current rumours around Loftus Road is that Harry Rednapp is drinking in the last chance saloon as manager of the Hoops with another loss today likely to lead chairman Tan Sri Tony Fernandes to show him the door.
Rangers have been terrible away from home, where they have lost every single match. At home though, they are a hard nut to crack.
Having been knocked out by Third Division Sheffield United in the FA Cup two weeks ago and losing to relegation rivals Burnley last week, QPR are back in the bottom three in 19th position. Things are looking bleak for manager Rednapp and another loss could lead to his exit this week.
Meanwhile, United will aim to bounce back after last week’s unexpected reverse at home and will be eager to put in a strong performance. The controversy surrounding Columbian striker Radamel Falcao being omitted last week from the squad is still a talking point and it remains to be seen if Falcao is in the team today with Robin van Persie a doubt with an ankle injury.
With the Hoops always performing better in front of their fans, this certainly won’t be a walk in the park for a United team who have been under-performing in recent weeks.
