Move to reintroduce trishaws as tourism attraction

Shaiful Azli: Trishaw rides a good high-value tourism experience.

Trishaws could soon make a comeback on Klang’s streets.

Once a familiar feature, the traditional three-wheeled vehicle is being mulled as a tourism experience in the royal city.

It aims to connect visitors with the city’s heritage while creating new opportunities for the local community.

VolunHeritage founder Shaiful Azli Muhamad Surol said the collaboration with Klang Royal City Council (MBDK), Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac) and Tourism Selangor was aimed at reviving trishaw rides as a high-value tourism experience.

He said the plan was to introduce 10 trishaws, costing an estimated RM90,000.

VolunHeritage is a community-driven cultural tourism initiative involved in placemaking projects.

Shaiful Azli said bringing back Klang’s trishaws would give the classic mode of transportation new purpose while opening a new chapter in the city’s visitor economy.

“Through this initiative, we aim to preserve the cultural character of trishaws while transforming the ride into an engaging cultural attraction.

“Beyond offering a nostalgic journey through the city, the revitalised trishaw service will showcase heritage sites, local traditions and historic parts of Klang in a more personal and engaging way.”

With MBDK’s support, the initiative was expected to complement existing tourism offerings, he said.

“These include reintroducing the former trishaw route around Jambatan Kota and the area that was once Klang’s community and economic centre,” he added.

Klang-born resident NP Raman, 79, said the trishaw was not merely a traditional mode of transportation.

He said it was a symbol of old-town life, social interactions and the collective memories of the Klang community.

“I hope MBDK will create a trishaw loop linking Pasar Jawa, the lower deck of Jambatan Kota, Masjid India Muslim Tengku Kelana, Klang’s Little India and the Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery,” said Raman.

“This would revive the historic route as a unique way to experience Klang’s heritage.”
