THOSE setting off fireworks and firecrackers during the festive season are required to clean up the debris or face penalties.

Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) enforcement assistant Khairul Azmil said penalties were a fine of not more than RM2,000, community service of not more than 12 hours or both, upon conviction.

“The public can also lodge complaints on this matter through SWCorp’s website,” he said when met at Jalan A in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur.

The penalties are in line with Section 77A and 77B of the amended Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) implemented from Jan 1 this year.

Khairul was speaking to reporters after engaging with community activist Yee Poh Ping, who called for stronger campaigns by SWCorp and Alam Flora to raise awareness among the public on littering.

Yee said people tended to dispose of their rubbish improperly.

“Some still throw rubbish out of their vehicle’s windows.

“The authorities should step up efforts to raise awareness of the importance of not littering.

“People should be encouraged to bring a plastic bag with them and dispose of the rubbish only when they find a bin or upon returning home,” said Yee.

Khairul said maintaining public cleanliness was a collective responsibility.
