The interfaith Christmas gathering organised by the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) Sibu branch has been described as an important platform for strengthening unity and harmony within Sibu’s multi-faith community.
ACS Sibu branch chairman Archdeacon Jose Jol Endru said such gatherings provided an opportunity for leaders and followers of different religions to come together in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
He said the event in Sibu was especially meaningful as it unified representatives of Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and other faiths.
The archdeacon, who is also vicar of St John’s Anglican Church, said that interfaith harmony was a key foundation for nation-building and community development, particularly in Sarawak which was well known for its spirit of unity in diversity.
He said that the peace enjoyed in Sarawak enabled people to live comfortably.
“This peace allows us to live together, eat together and respect one another.
“When we look at countries experiencing turmoil, the suffering they endure serves as a reminder of how vital peace and unity are.”
Jose Jol also expressed hope that Sibu and Sarawak would continue to progress economically and educationally, in line with the state government’s focus on human capital development and rural infrastructure.
He stressed that the peace and unity enjoyed today had not been easily achieved, but were the result of the efforts and sacrifices of previous generations, and must be preserved for the benefit of future generations.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that this peace is maintained and passed on to our children and grandchildren.”
The gathering was attended by about 100 participants, including religious leaders and representatives from various communities.
