SELAYANG Municipal Council (MPS) is in the midst of drafting a strategic plan to reorganise small traders.
Its president Shahman Jalaludin told StarMetro that hawkers in Selayang were now “scattered”.
“An engagement session about the Strategic Plan for the Management and Empowerment of Small Traders 2026-2030 was held from Nov 12 to 14.
“We collected feedback from 350 respondents on suitable places to run their businesses,” he said when met at Menara MPS after chairing the council’s full board meeting.
He also said the plan would include initiatives to whitelist unlicensed hawkers.
“After the plan’s launch next year, we will encourage all hawkers to apply for a business licence.
“Nevertheless, enforcement actions on unlicensed hawkers will continue as usual,” he said, adding that the plan was also aimed at turning hawker centres as tourist attractions.
Separately, he said changes to MPS’ parking revenue collection following the implementation of the Selangor Intelligent Parking (SIP) system could only be determined in the first quarter of next year.
“The system is still in the transition phase,” he said, adding that negotiations with the new concessionaire were ongoing.
“Though the parking revenue ratio has already been finalised by the state government, several other aspects such as manpower distribution, installation and maintenance of closed-circuit television cameras and logistics still need to be discussed,” he said.
Under the SIP model, parking revenue will be split with 50% going to the concessionaire, 40% to local councils involved and 10% to Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) Selangor.
MPS is one of four local councils implementing SIP, alongside Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Shah Alam City Council (MBSJ) and Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ).
