National car convoy puts fuel efficiency to test

A CONVOY of the Malaysian national car went on a spin around Penang island and the mainland to test its fuel efficiency.

Participants in 40 cars drove 110km in the Proton S70 Penang One Tank Challenge, passing historical landmarks and Proton dealerships, and later returning to the starting point at Setia Central Juru in Bukit Mertajam.

They were escorted by police outriders as they vied to see who was the most fuel efficient.

When met at the flag-off point, Samuel Anand, 42, a supervisor, said it was his first time participating in an event like this.

“It seemed like a lot of fun. When I heard about it, I wanted to participate.”

Samuel, who loves driving, added: “I have had this car for almost a year and it’s great.

“It’s nice that they organised this as we get to mingle with others who own the same car model.”

Penang Proton manager G. Hariharan said participants were from Penang, Perlis and Perak.

“They are all Proton S70 owners who responded to our post about the event on our official page.”

It was organised by Proton in conjunction with the Hari Sukan Negara celebration and in collaboration with the Penang tourism and creative economy committee, with PETRONAS as fuel partner.

The top three drivers with the lowest fuel consumption received RM1,000, RM800 and RM600 cash respectively.

“The aim of the event was to highlight the efficiency of the S70 1.5 Turbo for city driving.

“We consider it the best sedan with a turbo engine priced below RM100,000.”

Hariharan said Proton, having joined the Aspen-Klippa Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) 2025 as official car partner, would be giving away a S70 in a lucky draw.

Present at the flag-off was Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.
