SELANGOR will roll out mental health programmes in schools next year to tackle increased bullying and criminal cases among students.
State public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said she brought up the matter when discussing Selangor’s Budget 2026 with Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
“A number of pilot projects are being planned.
“They are aimed at identifying ways to prevent bullying and crimes in schools.
“We are also looking at enhancing existing support systems, such as counselling teachers and the Pembimbing Rakan Sebaya (peer mentorship) programme,” she said.
Jamaliah, who is also Bandar Utama assemblyman, said the recent stabbing incident involving a teenage girl by a fellow student at a school in her constituency underscored the need for improved support systems to ensure a safe learning environment for all students.
Jamaliah was speaking after launching the state-level National Environment Day 2025 celebration, organised by Selangor Department of Environment (DOE) at Paya Indah Wetlands in Dengkil.
Themed “Environment: A Collective Responsibility”, the event also featured exhibitions on wildlife and nature by government agencies.
On efforts to address pollution, Jamaliah said the state government was exploring ways to combat open burning and illegal dumpsites.
“This may include holding joint workshops to brainstorm ideas and enforcement action, involving various federal, state and local agencies.
“Open burning and illegal dumpsite issues are not easy to solve.
“Despite round-the-clock monitoring by local authorities, new sites always crop up again,” she said.
According to Jamaliah, nearly 2,000 open burning cases were reported throughout Selangor last year.
There were more than 770 incidents as of May this year, of which, 60% were caused by burning of rubbish in residential areas, she added.
Also present at the event were Selangor DOE director Datuk Wandi Yadzid Yaakob and Norfadhilah Ahmad Subaker, who represented Paya Indah Wetlands.
