The long Deepavali weekend was a vibrant time for tradition, family, friends and festive travels.
Stalls selling sweets, flowers, festive clothes and decorations enjoyed brisk business as revellers made their last-minute shopping.
Celebrations for Hindus began with the oil bath ritual before sunrise, followed by prayers at home and temple visits.
Homes were decorated with kolam, oil lamps and festive decorations while fireworks display added to the mood.
The Festival of Lights is often celebrated with relatives and friends of all races, who are welcomed with delicious traditional snacks such as murukku, achu murukku and adhirasam (a traditional Indian sweet).
While those celebrating were busy preparing food, welcoming guests to their homes and visiting family and friends, many others took advantage of the break for leisure and quality time with loved ones.
Some took the opportunity to go sightseeing and make the most of the holiday.
This was evident from the heavy traffic on major highways leading up to the weekend.
