Some RM200,000 is being allocated annually to improve infrastructure at the Sibu district police headquarters in Sarawak.
Part of the funds have been used to build a playground, in a five-month project that was completed in June.
Speaking during a visit to the site, Pelawan assemblyman Datuk Michael Tiang said the playground was part of his Rural Transformation Project initiative, especially for the police force.
“It was built at the force’s request because many officers live here with their families, and their children had nowhere to play.”
He said there were more projects in the pipeline, including repairs to the futsal and tennis courts, and building a gazebo for families to hold barbecues or gatherings.
A kindergarten within the compound also needed upgrading, he said, as the roof was leaking and it was not air-conditioned.
“It really needs electricity supply so that air-conditioning can be installed.
“We will also replace the roof, improve waterproofing and add a new awning,” he said of the kindergarten which has about 40 students attending the morning and afternoon sessions.
Tiang said such projects were aimed at giving back to the police community.
“The police have served us well. They protect us, look after our safety and safeguard our interests.
“I think it’s time for us to do something for them, especially to meet their needs.”
