MELAKA: When social activist Mohd Radzmin Roslan sat down to write a simple letter asking for help so others could celebrate Deepavali, he never expected it to spark such a ripple of kindness.
Within 24 hours of sending his appeal, a local food and beverage company responded, making the 36-year-old’s effort to bring joy to the needy even more meaningful and proving that generosity can still light up lives during this Festival of Light.
Mohd Radzmin, who is part of Persatuan Kebajikan Nadi Anda Nadi Aspirasi (Nana), had written to several companies seeking food items to distribute to underprivileged families ahead of Deepavali.
"I only hoped someone would take notice,” he said, recalling how the letter was written late one night after families who could barely afford to celebrate wanted his help.
Mohd Radzmin said to his surprise, he received a reply the next day.
"That moment reminded me that many kind people out there are willing to help," he after receiving a symbolic handover of Deepavali goodie bags and food aid from Mamee Double Decker executive director Datuk Gary Choo Kok Sen at Tanjung Minyak on Friday (Oct 17).
Also present was Nana chairman Farzana Hayani Mohd Nasir.
The association plans to distribute festive packages to about 120 revellers including small treats for the children.
“Our aim is simple - to make sure no one feels forgotten during Deepavali,” he said.
“Many of the families we visit tell us they have not celebrated properly in previous year," he said.
Mohd Radzmin, who has long volunteered with various non-governmental organisations, said such initiatives also strengthen social bonds across communities.
"The spirit of Deepavali belongs to all Malaysians and I am just doing my part to help my countrymen," he added.
Meanwhile, Choo said he was touched by the heartfelt tone of Mohd Radzmin’s letter and his desire to help others.
"It was not just a request for sponsorship as I saw it as a genuine call to spread unity and hope," he said.
