Defective hose leaves customer bent out of shape

The Tribunal ordered the respondent to refund Mohd Audi RM270 for the defective hose he received.

IT CAN be a struggle finding spare parts for an old car, and frustrating when a defective part is delivered to you.

Project engineer Mohd Audi Aizat Mohd Zim, 37, spent several months on and offline looking for original parts for his Japanese sedan’s air-conditioning (AC) system.

He visited many AC service centres in Johor Baru and online marketplaces searching for them, but to no avail.

“They either had copy parts or no stock of genuine ones,” he said when met outside the Johor Tribunal for Consumer Claims in Johor Baru.

Mohd Audi finally managed to find an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in Rawang, Selangor, for his 13-year-old vehicle.

He said he bought a discharge hose for RM270, liquid hose for RM240 and short hose for RM140 via the company’s website.

“In a car’s AC system, different types of hoses transport refrigerant between components.

“It was high time for the hoses to be replaced as the AC had started giving problems.

“It cost me less than RM700 to replace my car’s three AC hoses instead of having it done at a workshop where the bill could easily hit RM2,000,” he said.

The items were paid for via a RM650 bank transfer on July 10 and arrived on July 14, 2025.

“When I unboxed the items, the discharge hose was bent while the liquid and short hoses were in good condition.”

Mohd Audi then called the seller and was given two options: return the discharge hose and get 80% of RM270 back, or straighten the hose himself.

“I refused and instead used the old hose and only replaced the liquid and short hoses,” he said, adding that he wanted a full refund for the bent hose.

Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli ordered the respondent to refund RM270 within two weeks, and for Mohd Audi to return the discharge hose upon receiving the money.

Those seeking redress for the purchase of goods or services under RM50,000 can visit the Johor Tribunal for Consumer Claims during office hours at Level 17, Menara Ansar, Jalan Trus or call 07-227 1755/1766 with enquiries.
