More than 140 students in Perai, Penang, received RM370,000 worth of free laptops and financial aid to ease their burden and improve access to education this year.

The support came from Perai assemblyman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu under his “Siswa Perai 2025” initiative.

Sundarajoo, who is the state housing and environment committee chairman, said funding for the programme came from his savings.

Sundarajoo said the funds were set aside prior to him entering politics.

“I understand the struggles of students as I come from a modest background,” said Sundarajoo adding that he was driven by a commitment to ensure no student in Perai was left behind.

“Education can change lives when opportunities are made available.

“Every student deserves a fair chance, regardless of their circumstances,” he said.

He reminded the recipients that the aid was more than just material support.

“The laptops and financial aid are not merely machines or money.

“They symbolise access to knowledge, empowerment, and the future.

“I hope you use them wisely and, in time, help others as you progress.”

At the event held at Komtar, he had also distributed laptops worth RM49,500 distributed to undergraduates to support their coursework and online learning.

He added that programme complemented the state government’s Penang2030 vision of building a more inclusive and progressive society.

He added that the programme would continue throughout the year.

Sundarajoo said he was open to collaborations that could further strengthen the initiative.

“When we invest in students, we are investing in the future of our community,” he added.
