SOME 143 Johor Fire and Rescue Department personnel are undergoing a mandatory six-month weight loss programme, with a Dec 31 deadline for results.

Department director Siti Rohani Nadir said those involved, representing about 10% of the state’s total force, had a body mass index (BMI) of between 30 and 40.

“The issue is critical and needs to be taken seriously because it is closely related to the health and fitness of our firefighters,” Siti Rohani said after the department’s monthly assembly.

She said it was compulsory for these personnel to take part to ensure optimum fitness.

The department has set a target for the personnel, who are mostly aged 40 and above, to reduce their BMI to around 29 by year end and 28 in 2026.

“Failing to achieve the target will not disqualify the officers from continuing participating in the programme, but they will not be eligible to be considered for the Excellent Service Award or promotion,” she said.

The comprehensive programme includes physical training, nutrition coaching, and monitoring by certified trainers.

The participants are tracked on their exercise regime, body fat and water composition, and nutritional recommendations, as per Health Ministry guidelines.

Siti Rohani said physical fitness was paramount to firefighers, who were responsible for saving lives during disasters.

Previously, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said firefighters needed to maintain a BMI of 28 or below to be eligible for promotions, bringing their standards in line with those of the police. — By ZAZALI MUSA
