Association members who raised funds for children with cancer.
THIRTY members of the United Committee of Sibu Buddhist Association shaved their heads to raise RM22,526.77 for the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS).
The funds are to support children and families affected by childhood cancer across Sarawak.
The “GoBald 2025” satellite shave event was held at the association’s premises.
Association chairman Ivy Chieng, who led the initiative, said this marked the third time they had joined GoBald to organise a satellite shave.
“With the support of everyone, we hope to give our fullest encouragement to the children in Sarawak who are cancer patients.
“Whether by shaving your head or raising funds, every gesture carries a powerful message of care and strength for the children,” she said.
SCCS president Mary Kiu said they were deeply touched by the generosity and compassion shown by the association.
“Their continued support is a great reminder to our children and families that they are not alone in this journey.
“Every shaved head is a symbol of solidarity and love, and every ringgit raised helps us sustain the critical services that make a real difference in the lives of children with cancer,” she added.
The non-profit organisation requires over RM2mil annually to sustain its essential services, supporting more than 150 families each year.
In 2025, SCCS has already spent over RM1.9mil on medical aid alone – the highest in its history – driven by a surge in specialised treatment needs.
Kiu anticipates that these costs will continue rising.
The society also provides medical and financial aid to families in need, offering accommodation, food and transportation at the Kuching halfway home for rural families with children undergoing active treatment.
SCCS also organises counselling sessions and recreational activities for the children and their families, sponsor medical equipment not available in government hospitals and distribute care packs to help new patients adapt to life in the ward, among other things.
The overall “GoBald 2025” campaign aims to raise RM1mil and shave 400 heads in solidarity with children battling cancer.
Since its founding in 2001, SCCS has supported over 1,700 families across Sarawak.
