Homegrown innovations and ecosystem initiatives, set to shape the future of semiconductors and edge artificial intelligence (AI), were highlights of a semiconductor industry meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

The Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA) National Day annual dinner celebration and fifth annual general meeting (AGM) was attended by 500 members, including captains of the electrical and electronics industry, key government agencies and representatives from various foreign embassies.

The showcases included local semiconductor designer SkyeChip Sdn Bhd introducing MARS1000, Malaysia’s first edge AI smart Internet of Things device.

The cost-effective, compact, energy-efficient design enables autonomous robotics, intelligent video analytics, smart cities, industrial automation and generative AI – positioning Malaysian innovation on the global AI stage, MSIA said in its media statement.

Elliance Sdn Bhd, which specialises in consultancy and solutions for manufacturing and agricultural industries, introduced EdgeMind, a locally developed edge AI system designed to democratise AI adoption across industry, agriculture and education.

MSIA said by enabling faster, easier and more cost-effective development of AI solutions, EdgeMind is poised to transform how AI technologies are deployed in these sectors.

This advancement is expected to not only drive significant improvements in operational efficiency and effectiveness but also contribute to the growth of Malaysia’s AI talent pool.

The Industrial Skills Framework (IndSF) for Semiconductor was spotlighted as a cornerstone of Malaysia’s semiconductor roadmap.

The Malaysia IndSF for semiconductors is the world’s first fully dedicated, standalone sector-specific roadmap for semiconductor talent development, MSIA said.

The “Malaysia E&E Journey Timeline” was also unveiled, tracing the industry’s progress from its beginnings in the 1970s to its position today as a global semiconductor player.

In his address, MSIA president Datuk Seri Wong Siew Hai reaffirmed the association’s role in championing the ecosystem.

As examples, he cited the launch of MSIA AI Nexus (MAIN) Cluster, designed to strengthen the country’s position in AI innovation by linking local electrical and electronic (E&E) firms, AI technology players and academia, and the hosting of Asean Semiconductor Summit 2025 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Wong also highlighted the upcoming launch of Aurum, a diverse talent network to nurture the next generation of Malaysian leaders, and emphasised alignment with the National Semiconductor Strategy as a key driver of industry growth.

MSIA said the National Day celebration reflected the achievements of its members and the momentum of a nation determined to rise, scale and shine as one of the world’s leading semiconductor hubs.

With its growing innovation ecosystem and talent development initiatives, Malaysia is steadily emerging as one of the Brainports of the world – a nexus of advanced technology, research and industrial excellence, said the association.

Present at the event were Finance Minister II Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
