Road resurfacing following the pipe replacement is still underway and expected to be completed this month.
THE decades-long water crisis faced by residents in Section 22, Petaling Jaya, has finally ended with the completion of a major pipe replacement project.
The new pipes, made of durable ductile iron, are expected to last half a century, bringing relief to a community that has endured frequent and frustrating water cuts since the 1990s.
For residents like Mashrifah Ab Rahim, 64, the completion of the project is a life-changing event.
“In a month, we experienced at least three incidents where water was cut off for three days in a row,” she said.
Mashrifah said the constant water cuts meant that Air Selangor’s water tankers were a regular sight in the area.
Her neighbour, Mary Jegaraj, 60, recalled how the unreliable water supply would turn her own home into a refuge for those in need.
“Sometimes Mashrifah would even come to my house for water when she had no choice,” she said, noting that the higher-elevation areas were particularly hard-hit.
The nearly RM6mil project was a collaboration between Air Selangor Sdn Bhd, Golden Admiral Sdn Bhd and Straits Consulting Engineers.
It was announced by Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei, who confirmed that while the 6.15km of new pipes across 17 roads was fully installed, road resurfacing was still underway and expected to be completed this month.
“With this project, it is hoped the long-standing water problems in Section 22 will be resolved,” Lim added.
Air Selangor Capital Works section head Khairul Anam Mhd Sun Haji said the project included the upgrade of 30-year-old asbestos cement pipes to newer ductile iron pipes.
“The new material is stronger and more durable, and we expect it to last up to 50 years,” he said.
