Better teamwork urged to combat illegal ads in Sibu

SMC officer taking down illegal moneylending ads.

SINCE the start of the year, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has removed more than 8,000 illegal advertisements promoting unlicensed moneylending services.

Deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Rosely said in a media statement that a total of 8,175 such ads were seized across the Sibu area between January and Aug 12.

This was the result of round-the-clock enforcement by SMC officers.

“Our enforcement teams work tirelessly to take down these illegal ads but the problem must be stopped at the source by those responsible,” he said.

He stressed that local authorities in Sarawak were only allowed to remove such ads.

To effectively combat the issue, he called for stronger teamwork with other agencies.

“The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) can help trace and clamp down on the phone numbers on these ads.

“At the same time, police cooperation is crucial to investigate and take firm action against illegal moneylending,” he said.

He also urged the public not to engage unlicensed moneylenders and to report such activities to the authorities immediately.
