TAIPING market traders and customers must take responsibility in keeping wet markets clean and not rely solely on the local authority to do the task.
Calling for their cooperation, Taiping Municipal Council president Khairul Amir Mohamad Zubir said they must ensure cleanliness and hygiene were observed at wet markets.
“Traders must ensure food is stored properly, waste is disposed of properly in provided bins and the drains are not clogged or polluted.
“Let us all make the culture of cleanliness a daily practice,” he said, adding that the municipal council, on its part, would ensure waste management was carried out according to schedule.
Khairul Amir said this when launching a rat extermination campaign at the Aulong public market.
The municipality has 11 public markets under its supervision.
On rats at the markets, he said it was important to control their population.
“Rats are a health concern.
“The rodents are known to be carriers of various diseases such as leptospirosis, salmonellosis and hantavirus,” he said.
Khairul Amir said the rat extermination campaign was not only focused on physical disinfection actions, but was also to instil awareness of the importance of maintaining cleanliness continuously and collectively.
It was part of the municipal council’s agenda to uphold standards in the management of public markets, not only in terms of physical facilities but also in terms of public health and environmental cleanliness.
