Fiver-star rating target for public toilets in Sibu eateries

Yiing says regular checks will compel eateries to provide five-star restrooms.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is aiming for toilets at all eateries in the town to get a five-star rating.

SMC public health, environment and municipal services deputy chairman Yiing Sy Huat however said no deadline was set for premises owners to meet this standard.

“To ensure the cleanliness of eateries, particularly in terms of toilet conditions, we will conduct daily inspections,” he announced at a press conference.

Yiing said the number of five-star toilets in the town’s eateries was still very low.

“As of February, only six out of 91 food establishments in the town had toilets that achieved the five-star rank.

“From this, it is clear that there is still a lot of room for improvement in the toilets of eateries that fall under the SMC’s jurisdiction.

“Therefore, premises operators must take greater responsibility in improving the condition of their toilets, even though no deadline has been set,” he said.

Yiing said toilets at 23 eateries had four-star rating, while 42 others had three stars.

Another 11 food operators had two stars for their public restrooms.

Yiing said the council had outsourced the management of public toilets in the municipality to two contractors.

They operate eight toilets in Area A which is the central business district, and 10 toilets in Area B that covers the town’s outskirts.

Although the contractors would check these toilets daily, SMC public health officers would conduct further inspections of these facilities twice a week.

“If there’s any non-compliance, the contractor responsible will be fined,” he said.

He urged people to be mindful of cleanliness in public toilet and provide feedback to the council.

“Our objective is to ensure that all toilets achieve a five-star rating,” he said. – ANDY CHUA
