S'gor MB urges speedy resolution to issues plaguing flood mitigation efforts in the state

SHAH ALAM: Selangor Mentri Besar Amirudin Shari has instructed Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim to urgently resolve all issues hindering the construction and implementation of flood mitigation efforts, whether at the local, state, or federal level.

“Long-term solutions must be implemented as soon as possible through cooperation from all parties, including the Federal Government," he said in a statement Sunday (April 20).

Amirudin said he had witnessed the impact of flash floods caused by the high rainfall last week, which has affected residents, especially in areas such as Taman Melawis in Klang and Taman Sri Muda in Shah Alam.

He added that his office has also been contacted by residents expressing their anxiety and concern over the recurring situation, due to the perceived delays in the implementation of components under the Flood Mitigation Plan.

“Although nearly four years have passed, the horrific episode of the major floods in December 2021 still lingers in the memory of every Selangor resident, and no one wants to see it happen again.

“As an initial step, my political secretary Saifuddin Shafi has been instructed to convene an urgent coordination meeting tomorrow involving all relevant parties, including both the Shah Alam City Council and Klang Royal City Council, as well as the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, so that this issue can be addressed immediately,” the Mentri Besar said.

The RM4.6mil flood mitigation plan under the Shah Alam City Council’s (MBSA) Shah Alam Sustainable Urban Drainage Master Plan (SAsud) involved upgrading the drainage networks as well as building pump houses around Shah Alam.

The project began in 2023 but faced delays.

Earlier, Taman Sri Muda residents gathered at Jalan Mewah 25/65 in Taman Sri Muda, to express their frustration over delays in carrying out flood mitigation plans in their area.

The residents collected over 4,000 signatures and planned to handover a memorandum to Amirudin..

Two buses were arranged to transport 80 residents to submit the memorandum to Amirudin at Ayer Kuning in Perak, where he is currently helping to campaign for the Barisan Nasional candidate in the by-election.
