A MOTION is expected to be tabled at the next Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting to make it mandatory to have automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in public places.
“For the next sitting, I think there will be a new law where public premises will be equipped with an AED equiment,” Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said.
He said Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, is expected to table the motion.
Speaking to reporters after launching the Sibu Branch Malaysia Red Crescent (MRC) flag sale, Chieng said MRC would play an important role in teaching the public how to use the device.
AEDs in in public places can be used to help individuals who suffered a heart attack.
Chieng said AEDs would be placed at the central market and MRC would train hawkers to operate the device.
“Before professional medical help arrives, committee members will be able to provide initial assistance using AED equipment for first aid.”
He said the proposal to make AED mandatory was made last year.
