Retiree Ng Mee Sin was overjoyed when her husband’s name was announced as the grand-prize winner during the Ipoh City Council’s (MBI) lucky draw for ratepayers with no arrears.

Her husband Lee Thart Wah, 84, won a Perodua Bezza worth about RM34,000 at the event held at MBI’s headquarters.

Ng, 76, said they had only expected to take home a small cash prize.

“Somehow, we ended up with the grand prize,” she said, adding that this was their first time winning such a reward as ratepayers.

“We already have a car and I haven’t renewed my licence in years.

“As our children are all based in Kuala Lumpur, no one will be driving the car.

“We plan to sell it, but we are still happy to have won,” said the former accountant.

She also praised the MBI move as a great way to reward responsible taxpayers.

Prayer goods seller Kok Chin Hong, 49, who won the second prize of an electric motorcycle, was also thrilled.

“I already own a motorcycle. So, this is a wonderful addition.

“I had actually been hoping to get the first prize but I’m still thankful,” he said.

A total of 28 ratepayers walked away with prizes which included cash and appliances.

Former Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin, who was present at the event, said the lucky draw was held to show appreciation to responsible ratepayers.

The city council recorded 131,272 bills settled, with total payments of RM60.8mil.

“I congratulate Ipoh residents for fulfilling their responsibility by paying their assessment tax,” said Rumaizi.

“I hope this support continues as we move to make Ipoh a smart city and a prosperous one.”
