Mayor pledges to keep Klang cleaner, vibrant

IT’S been 100 days since Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain became Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) mayor.

“Yes, it is hard to believe, today marks 100 days in office,” he said earlier Wednesday (March 12) morning.

Abd Hamid added that the 100 days saw him tackle the cleanliness issue, management of children’s outdoor playground, improving drainage networks to avoid floods in residential and industrial areas.

“In a little over three months, we have stepped up efforts to keep the city clean including the drainage and the riverside that meanders through Klang. We are also widening the drainage networks to overcome overflowing of surface runoff and floods,” he said.

As he reflected on this first milestone, Abd Hamid admits there have been challenges in finding solutions to overcome floods in industrial areas like Telok Gong in Port Klang due to soil compaction that limited water infiltration during continuous rains.

He said due to incessant rains, MBDK had to come up with a comprehensive view of the management of urban rainwater that included widening drains, flood mitigation ponds and flap gates to avoid back flow of surface runoff.

“We are optimistic to keep residential areas clean, so that it is cleaner, safer and more pleasant for all who live in the area. “Everyone is a stakeholder and we need the community to work together to ensure the environment is clean,” he said.

Other than cleanliness, Abd Hamid said he was committed to creating a city that would attract tourists in highlighting colonial buildings and bring in investment to foster job opportunities.

“We need to make sure we have got recreational amenities and free modes of transportation like buses for people to get around. “For Klang to be a truly resilient city, we must take meaningful action. Be innovative in our approach, go ahead with needed changes for better services and work together with all stakeholders,” he said.

Abd Hamid was appointed as MBDK’s second mayor on Dec 2, 2024 succeeding, Datin Paduka Noraini Roslan, who retired on Nov 20. His last posting was as Sepang Municipal Council president from September 2020.

Abd Hamid, 57, holds a Bachelor's Degree with Honours in Arts from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and he has been in the civil service since 1999.
