Mohamad Porkan: The event will strengthen community ties, fostering the spirit of togetherness.
This year’s Sibu Division mass breaking-of-fast event “Lan Berambeh Sungkei” is set to attract 20,000 participants.
Scheduled for March 15, it will be held at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase I from 4pm.
The seventh edition of this annual event is organised by the Sibu Division Islamic Festival Standing Committee.
Teaming up with the committee are the Nangka assemblyman service centre, and the National Unity and National Integration Department.
Sibu Division Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman said this year’s programme meant “Let’s Iftar Together” in Bahasa Sarawak.
“It follows a potluck concept, where participants bring their own food and share it with others, keeping alive a tradition passed down through generations,” he explained.
“This year, we are setting a target of 20,000 participants.
“Last year, during the sixth edition, we recorded over 15,000 attendees while the fifth edition in 2023 saw 10,000 participants,” he said at a press conference.
Sarawak Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapa’ee and Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang will be guests of honour.
Mohamad Porkan said the event aimed to strengthen community ties across races and religions, fostering the spirit of berambeh (togetherness) during Ramadan.
He added that the event would promote cultural unity as well as attract tourists.
“We encourage local representatives, department heads, association members and the public to attend in large numbers and come dressed in traditional attire.
“The iftar will begin at 6.46pm, marked by a symbolic drum- beating ceremony led by the guest of honour,” he added.
The programme will also feature food distribution by various agencies and departments, offering traditional dishes such as bubur pedas, bubur lambuk, dates, mee kolok and nasi ayam.
Various competitions will also be held as part of the programme.
