Village heads looking to do more after contract extension

Lim obtained RM200,000 to construct a sheltered basketball court in Kampung Baru Parit Jawa.

Chiefs of new villages in Johor, whose contracts have been extended until the end of April, are hoping to do more for their respective communities.Kampung Baru Parit Jawa village chief Lim Siew Chow said she had several projects in mind for the area.

“Last year, I obtained RM200,000 from the village development and security committee to construct a sheltered basketball court.

“Residents had been asking for such a facility, which also doubles as a venue for community activities.

“We used to hold such events in school halls but since politicians were not allowed on school grounds, it posed some inconvenience.

“The sheltered basketball court project was completed in December,” she told StarMetro.Lim said youths in the village were delighted as they could now play basketball every evening, regardless of the weather.

“The covered facility also provides convenience to villagers and residents from surrounding housing areas,” said Lim.

She added that she was planning to propose the construction of toilets next to the basketball court.

Lim said since being appointed village chief in 2022, she had organised various community events including Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations.

For Kampung Baru Masai village chief Dr Chua Ching Hao, bringing the community together was something close to his heart.

“This was done through community events such as our Semarak Kebangsaan programme, which promotes the use of Bahasa Malaysia, as well as a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration last year.

“As the village is more diverse these days, I decided to bring people of various races together to enjoy mooncakes and held a lantern parade.”

Chua said last year, an allocation of RM45,370 was used for road and infrastructure repairs, including the pavement beside SJK(C) Masai.”

Chua hopes to be reappointed in April so he can continue assisting people, especially those from low-income communities.

According to Johor executive councillor Ling Tian Soon, the contract of all 123 new village chiefs in the state had been extended until April 30.

Ling, who is state health and environment committee chairman, said their contracts were supposed to end on Dec 31, but were extended for another four months following approval from the state executive council.

“This is to enable the respective district offices to review the village chiefs’ performance and determine whether they will be reappointed or dropped.”
