A TOTAL of 139 fines were issued by Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ), between January and December last year, to individuals for open burning.
MPAJ president Dr Ani Ahmad said 65 operations were conducted against open burning during the same period.
“Thirty investigation papers were opened against offenders and RM28,350 in compound fines were collected,” she said during the local council’s full board meeting at Menara MPAJ in Pandan Indah.
The operations covered areas in Hulu Klang, Pandan Indah, Bukit Antarabangsa, Lembah Jaya and Teratai constituencies.
Compounds were issued under Section 16 of the Waste Collection and Disposal (MPAJ) 2007 by-laws.
The by-law stipulates: “No person shall burn or cause to be burned combustible materials, garbage or waste except for activities specified under the Environmental Quality (Prescribed Activities) (Open Burning) Order 2000.”
On another matter, Ani said the local council had so far collected RM14,360 from temporary fireworks sales permits in conjunction with Chinese New Year.
“About 25 applications were submitted as of Jan 15, and traders can operate until Feb 4.
“MPAJ will monitor the traders’ locations, while the police will monitor the products being sold,” she said.
The stall locations, she added, must not obstruct traffic, pedestrian walkways, fire hydrants and road intersections.
Meanwhile, Ani also announced a reshuffle of several of its department directors, effective Jan 15.
“This is in line with the directive by the Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar for public service agencies to rotate department heads,” she said.
