Companies and non-governmental organisations that want to organise cleaning programmes in public areas can apply for funding from the Federal Territories Department (JWP).

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the amount would depend on the proposal submitted.

“The offer is open throughout the year,” she said after launching the “Bersih Semua Tempat” (BeST) programme at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur shopping centre.

The initiative saw 1,000 volunteers, comprising students from higher education institutions, simultaneously cleaning up public housing projects around Kuala Lumpur.

Students from Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Mara, International Islamic University Malaysia and Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia were among those involved.

“JWP will accept funding applications for cleaning programmes in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan,” said Dr Zaliha.

“We are ramping up cleaning initiatives in view of Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship this year and Visit Malaysia 2026.”

She added that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) was also tasked with sprucing up public facilities in anticipation of these events.

It includes repairing potholes, repainting old buildings and installing decorative lights at selected spots in the city.

“More than 180 Asean meetings are slated to be held here and more than 35 million international tourists are expected next year,” said Dr Zaliha.

The launch of BeST also marked the start of the Federal Territories (FT) Day celebration on Feb 1.

JWP said in a statement that some 72,000 FT flags would be distributed throughout Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan.

More than 60 programmes, which include a run, plogging and gotong-royong, will also be carried out in the run-up to FT Day.
