Sibu fire station facilities to be upgraded


The dining hall of Sungai Merah station is in need of an upgrade.

PELAWAN assemblyman Datuk Michael Tiang has pledged to improve Sibu’s Sungai Merah Fire Station under his Rural Transformation Programme (RTP).

He said the project would look into improving equipment and facilities for functionality and firefighters’ comfort.

“Among them is the conversion of a sepak takraw court into a modern volleyball court where the floor and toilets are to be upgraded for durability and privacy,” he said.

“We plan to have a pantry with a wooden composite floor that is beautiful and easy to clean.

“The pantry ceiling will be made of gypsum board to improve comfort and safety,” said Tiang, who is also Sarawak Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government.

Tiang said gypsum boards would also be used for ceilings at the main office and lower office for a quieter working space.

With all these upgrades, he said, the Sungai Merah station would become more modern and provide better support for firefighters.

Several staff of the Pelawan Service Centre representing Tiang, accompanied by Sungai Merah Fire Station chief Abdul Mutalif Ja’afar, carried out a survey of the station to identify areas for improvement.

The Sungai Merah Fire Station on Old Airport Road began operations in 2005.
