‘Promote Johor’s distinctive attractions to tourists’

Leong: Review strategies to attract more business events to Johor.

THE state budget is anticipated to provide a significant boost to Johor government’s promotion of Visit Johor Year 2026 (VJY2026).

Johor Tourist Guides Association chairman Jimmy Leong said it was also important to leverage Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship in 2025 to draw more visitors from the region.

“Johor should focus on increasing arrivals from Asean countries, using Singapore’s Changi Airport as a key gateway for international travellers.

“At the same time, the state should also strengthen its cultural heritage offerings by drawing from its rich history.

“There is also a need to upskill tourist guides, particularly in areas of Johor with rich history and diverse geography,” he said when contacted.

Leong, however, expressed concern over slow progress in attracting business events to Johor.

“I would like to recommend a comprehensive review of strategies to attract more business events to Johor.

“It is important for us to maintain efficient border processing at Johor’s entry points.

“Without efficient entry processes, efforts towards VJY2026 could be undermined,” he warned.

When asked if Johor should follow Melaka’s example of appointing a celebrity as tourism ambassador to attract more visitors from China, Leong said the idea warranted further consideration.

“Such a promotional strategy could certainly increase visitor numbers, especially among fans of the celebrity.

“However, the destination must also offer attractions that truly captivate visitors.

“Our marketing strategies may change with trends, but the core of what Johor offers to the world should remain consistent.

“We need to effectively promote our distinctive attractions to stand out from other states,” he said.
