Teku cleanup garners strong engagement

A cleanup campaign at Teku Resettlement scheme in Sibu, Sarawak, saw the participation of over 100 people.

Representatives from government agencies, religious organisations, village development committees and private companies went round the village clearing up rubbish from roads and drains.

It was organised by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) in conjunction with World Clean Up Day to raise awareness about the importance of public hygiene.

SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley said Malaysia Cleanup Day 2024 was not just about communal activities but about educating the public on their shared responsibility to maintain public cleanliness.

“Cleanliness is not the responsibility of a few individuals – it’s a duty we all share,” he said.

He also hoped to make it into the Malaysia Book of Records for largest number of participants, most solid waste collected, longest duration of communal work and nationwide simultaneous implementation.

“This is a national effort, showcasing our commitment to making Malaysia a cleaner and more harmonious country.”

Organising chairman Simon Wee Kim Choon commended the participants’ strong spirit of unity and cooperation.
