Durians beckon people, from north to south, for taste of local favourite

KNOWN as the King of Fruits, the thorn-covered durian is loved by many Malaysians for the creamy sweetness hidden within.

During the recent durian season, different varieties appeared at roadside stalls, markets and pasar malam as well as shops dealing exclusive with the fruit, all around the country.

Despite its pungent smell, Black Thorn, Musang King, Red Prawn and D24 are among the most sought-after variants.

In certain areas, roadside traders wooed customers by setting up tables and chairs for comfortable delectation.

It is common to see people of different social demographics crowding durian spots, especially in the evenings, to savour the custard-like, creamy pulp of the fruit.

In recent years, a new tradition has surfaced with durian-themed parties being organised to celebrate special occasions.

Besides corporate companies, elected representatives are also known to hold durian events for their constituents.

There have also been whole events dedicated to the king, such as Penang Durian Festival, aimed at drawing tourists.
