‘Foster reading with physical books’

READING of physical books should be promoted to inculcate the habit among children, says Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai.

“In this modern era, it is easier to read ebooks as they are readily available online.

“This has become a different way to read, but reading books in their physical form is also interesting and beneficial,” he said at the launch of a book fair in Sibu, Sarawak.

Recounting his own use of physical books to acquire knowledge while at school and university, Sempurai said, “Reading physical books is much more comfortable for the eyes.”

The book fair at SRDC’s Sibu Jaya public library, which runs until Sept 28, has a collection of 100,000 books.

Sempurai said the large-scale event would help motivate children to read.

“Book fairs like this can help produce new generations of readers.

“In addition to our library here, we also have a rural library to promote reading. We also give books to longhouses,” he said. — By ANDY CHUA
