Local council ponders private service to catch strays in Sibu

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is looking at utilising private dog-catching services as the population of the animal is exploding.

Revealing this at its full board meeting, SMC chairman Clarence Ting said the cost factor would have to be considered.

“We need to reduce the stray dog population now as it is getting worse.

“We have previously conducted a trial run,” he said, adding that such services should not be too costly.

Clarence said the local council was facing manpower shortage in its dog-catching unit because of several retirements.

SMC public health standing committee chairman Richard Ting advised the council not to rush into this but to study the situation carefully.

He said if SMC did this in-house, training new staff would be cheaper than paying for private services.
