Sustainable Development Goals should be taught in schools, says Dr Zaliha

KUALA LUMPUR: The principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should be integrated into the school curriculum to connect students with its concepts from a young age, says Dr Zaliha Mustafa (pic).

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) then added that students should learn about the United Nations SDGs to ensure its future sustainability.

“To achieve these goals, we must nurture them from a young age. We can look at collaborating with the Education Ministry to incorporate the SDG subject so that students can learn about it not only at the center but also in schools,” she said.

Dr Zaliha said this on Thursday (Aug 8) after a soft launch and site visit to the proposed new site for the SDG Centre in Jalan Raja, Kuala Lumpur.

The new centre is to be relocated from its current site at the KL Library to the KL City Gallery building nearby.

“The discussions (on SDGs) are currently small-scale, but perhaps we can have further discussions with the ministry, and potentially even the Minister. This could allow for more focused discussions on the subject,” she said.

Malaysia is one of the United Nations member states which has adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Agenda and its 17 SDGs is a roadmap for ending poverty, protecting the planet and tackling inequalities.
