Nostalgic ride for 70 Convent Light Street ex-classmates at Big60 reunion in Penang

In convent school spirit, the former classmates donated a total of RM2,580 for St Joseph’s Home in Jalan Penang.

IN A heartwarming reunion, former students of Convent Light Street revisited their alma mater and reminisced about their school days.

Dubbed “Big60”, the event brought together some 70 former classmates who are now 60 years old, with attendees flying in from all over the globe.

Joan Lim-Choong, who headed the event organising committee, reminisced about the camaraderie formed over 12 years together, from kindergarten to secondary school.

“Our last gathering was during the Big50 10 years ago and since then, we have been celebrating birthdays every month and keeping in touch with each other.

“This year, we decided to return to celebrate these long friendships and pay tribute to our school that shaped us.

“Some of them returned from Australia, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Singapore, New Zealand and Hong Kong while the rest came from different states in Malaysia,” she said.

Among the participants was Juli Murshidah, 60, who was glad to make it to the reunion this year.

“This has been a wonderful muhibbah gathering with friends of all races and religions whom we’ve known since school days, over 50 years ago.

“We look forward to the Big70 reunion with all the ladies, God willing,” she said.

To relive their school days, the alumnae chartered 20 trishaws to explore George Town, evoking fond memories of the transportation mode that they once relied on to attend school.

The reunion not only fostered nostalgia but also generosity, as the group raised RM2,580 for St Joseph’s Home in Jalan Penang through voluntary donations.

At present, a total of 21 underprivileged children aged between five and 17 years are receiving care at the home.
