Varsity students deliver meals to needy community

ABOUT 100 food packets were distributed by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) students to the needy in Kampar, Perak.

The meals were given to elderly folk at several charity homes, including Beautiful Gate for the Disabled Foundation, I Care Centre, Pusat Jagaan Kasih Sayang Kampar and Rumah Orang Tua Gopeng.

A group of 16 final-year students from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences took part.

The food was provided by soup kitchen Pertubuhan Amal Ai Xin Fan Tong in Ipoh.

The distribution effort was part of UTAR students’ volunteer programme “Love Canteen”.

In February, the students distributed about 1,000 food packets in Ipoh to the elderly and those facing financial hardship.

UTAR Bachelor of Communication (Journalism) student Tay Yong Qi said the experience opened his eyes to challenges faced by the underprivileged.

“The programme has taught me that some people do not have easy access to food.

“It made me realise how important it is to appreciate the food we have,” said Tay.

Campaign treasurer Kuan Chu Yie said she was saddened to see elderly people living alone, especially in dilapidated homes.

“The campaign has brought to our attention the immediate needs and uncovered the hidden struggles within Ipoh’s communities,” she said.

Pertubuhan Amal Ai Xin Fan Tong assistant coordinator Adele Siew Li Me said a substantial number of individuals facing financial distress during the Covid-19 pandemic and movement control order prompted the organisation to extend support to them.

“We have initiated a comprehensive aid programme that encompasses not only distributing freshly prepared meals, but also delivering essential goods and vegetables to low-income communities.

“This effort aims to alleviate their financial strain and uphold our mission of ensuring ‘A full stomach for all’,” Siew said.
