I RECENTLY invited some friends from overseas to visit my hometown of Port Klang, Selangor.
While Port Klang has great tourist sites and food, I was disheartened by the sight of uncollected rubbish.
I told my guests that more efforts were needed to restore the city’s cleanliness.
Although waste collection is available with fixed schedules, it does not help when the public does not dispose of their rubbish properly.
I believe to achieve cleanliness in this beautiful city, environmental awareness and common courtesy is needed.
Teachers and parents need to lead the way in educating others to develop this awareness.
The consequences of poor rubbish disposal will not only result in unsightly scenes, these rubbish piles spread diseases.
The community needs to understand the consequences of not throwing rubbish into the spaces and bins provided.
Hosting community activities is another way to restore the city’s cleanliness.
The Klang Royal City Council can collaborate with different local organisations for such events.
Sponsors can provide participants with the necessary materials and competitions can be held to motivate the community.
