DRIVING along Jalan Masjid Negeri at night in Batu Lanchang, Penang, is set to become a more enjoyable experience following the installation of over 1,000 festive lanterns in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
The green and yellow lanterns come in two shapes – ketupat and crescent moon with star.
Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan Hooi Peng said the lanterns were put up in stages and would be completed just in time for Hari Raya.
She said the lanterns would be switched on nightly for about a month.
“Local property management company DS Asia Group generously sponsored the installation of the lanterns, which amounted to RM82,000.
“This initiative (to instal the lanterns) aims to promote unity and celebrate Malaysia’s diverse cultural traditions, embodying the spirit of a prosperous nation,” said Tan after a site inspection last week.
Also present was the group’s executive director Jack Loh.
The company had previously sponsored the installation of 650 lanterns along the same road during Chinese New Year.
Similarly, the Air Itam roundabout was lit up with the words “Salam Aidilfitri” in neon lights to enhance the festive mood in the area.
Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng Soon Siang said it was a tradition in the constituency to adorn the roundabout with colourful lights for Hari Raya and also to welcome local residents and tourists to the area.
