VISITORS to Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) in Bandar Baru Selayang, Batu Caves, are in for a treat as the council is giving away up to 2,500 packets of free bubur lambuk to the public for Ramadan.

The programme by MPS’ sports and welfare club has been going on for the past seven years, said MPS deputy president Adi Faizal Ahmad Tarmizi.

He said the bubur lambuk was cooked by MPS staff who volunteered to prepare the dish from scratch.

“The stirring process to prevent the porridge from burning takes the most effort and this is where everyone, including me, will cook it over the 10 giant cooking pots we have set up at the carpark,” said Adi Faizal.

The objective of the programme was to instil a better sense of teamwork and camaraderie among departments and to improve rapport with the public as well as other private and government agencies.

On the council’s role in ensuring that traders at its Ramadan bazaars are complying with hygiene and food safety standards, Adi Faizal said a team of 20 officers from its solid waste management and health department have been assigned to monitor 32 locations under the council’s purview.

This year, 2,383 trading lots were approved by MPS.

In urging consumers to adopt greener practices such as reducing food waste, the council also gave away free tiffin carriers to the public to discourage the use of plastic bags.

A total of 1,000 tiffin carriers and recyclable shopping bags have been given away to visitors at six of the council’s Ramadan bazaars.

On another matter, Adi Faizal said Smart Selangor buses would continue to operate along its existing route.

“Altogether, 11 buses will ply the Selayang Mutiara to LRT Gombak, Tesco Rawang to the Rawang Bus Terminal, Batu Arang to the Sungai Buloh KTM Komuter and Wangsa Permai to Selayang Stadium routes,” he said.

On the issue of KDEB Waste Management taking over handling rubbish for commercial entities in 49 zones under the council’s purview, Adi Faizal said this was one way for the council to check on illegal dumping.

KDEB’s year-long contract for the collection of waste from commercial and industrial businesses, he said, started on March 16.

He urged private waste contractors who have existing contracts in Selayang to register with KDEB and come to an agreement on pricing for their customers’ benefit.
